3 Good Reasons to Start a Blog

everyone by now has tried their hand at a blog. But why should you truly commit to it, and make it a serious project? Would anyone want to make an argument? here are 3 good reasons that I can think of:

:

1. a blog establishes your online presence

Internet connection
this is first and foremost. your blog is essentially your home on the web. Your own personal space, which you can pimp out as you please, add the links that you want, change the template, whatever. You have total control. But a blog is just more than a custom website: a blog is the means by which you can deliver your thoughts, findings, music, images and video to the world … in an easy format. WordPress is by far the most popular blogging software, and you can jump over to wordpress.com for a free hosted blog, or download the free wordpress.org software for even greater customisability. Either way, its one of the most liberating steps you can ever take. Avoid blogspot like the plague. It has a reputation for being the ghetto of spammers and newbies; the templates are ugly, and the commenting system is from a digital hell. WordPress all the way my friends.

:

2. a blog offers infinite growth

twitter-hockey-stick

once you are set up, your blog can begin to grow. The first couple of months can be excruciatingly painful. Maybe 30 hits, 50 or 70 a day, barely touching 100 if you’re lucky. How to attract readers, and establish reliable blog traffic? that’s one of the greatest unsolvables of the online world. By hard work and graft, cajoling your friends into visiting, pimping your stuff on forums and twitter … by hook or by crook, you damn well earn every single pageview. It’s hard hard work, and a true test of resolve. But if you persist by blogging 3-5 times a week, go out there and promote it, the comments and the visits will come. Slow, and arduous, I’m telling you. But once you get a platform, a voice for yourself, the breakout moment will come. It’s different for each person (depending on their niche or interest) but those that stick in there and produce honest, authentic, valuable content will reap the rewards. And that moment will come.

:

3. a blog is your ticket out of here

E-commerce

this is the great dream, to live off your bloggings. Who doesn’t dream this? to wake up each morning, tap a few keystrokes into your blog, and watch the traffic and money flow in. IF ONLY! This is the dream, and the lure for many novice bloggers. But honestly, how many even make $100 a month from their writings? not many, methinks. I won’t vouch for monetary success, but there are many examples out there. Self made bloggers who earn the bulk of their living through their articles, affiliate marketing, sideline advertising, and general ‘online presence’, They are out there. And they represent the infinite dream of every aspiring blogger. May we all dream long and hard!

Gosh I am in love with your blog already! You did a good job pimping out to Stumble…lol. I have been blogging since Aug 08. I can finally say that I have grown an amazing community of cyber friends that come to visit me…it took some time to do…but it has worked. I made the switch from blogger to WP in December…that has proven quite successful. As far as $$ goes. Not gonna happen for me. I don’t put ads on my blog. I am hoping for that day when a magazine exec stumbles across my blog and says…”Stop the presses! We need this woman to write articles for us!” LOL…one can dream…

  2. MsWabbit Says:

Eloquent and inspirational…you’ve motivated me to “click the link!”

  3. Apesaje Says:

Great entry! I used to have a free WordPress blog like this one a year back. And I’m proud of my achievements there. I still remember the feeling of getting my 1st comment in my blog. LOL! Now I’ve switched to a self-hosted one, but also WordPress.

I’m glad I clicked the link on Twitter. =)

  4. mmusa Says:

Good reinforcement, thanks. I’m focusing more on blogging now, mostly in regards to point 1. One thing I constantly wonder about is: I understand the need to be regular with blogging but there also has to be a good reason (at least in my mind) to post something. Thoughts?

  5. ruby door Says:

all good points. i think any blog is what you make it…. meaning that if your content is fresh and linkable and keyword-friendly, a following is inevitable.

i’m on blogspot myself. i like the simplicity of it and i do hear your grumbling. 😉 right now i’m for keeping things as easy as possible while i’m busy with making my own little comeback on the net.

one thing is definite…people are loyal to their venues. you have to be in more than one place for people to find you.

    ruby~

  6. JoyFrequencies Says:

Good advice, but I think you are too hard on blogspot 🙂

    I love my blogspot blogs!

With some creative thought he templates can be made to look good and the commenting system is fine, it is easy and a lot quicker to use than wordpress too….so don’t rule out blogspot.

I enjoy your blog and tweets – keep up the good work!

  7. debbie Says:

thanks for the encouragement…my blog is fairly new…I welcome your comments…I enjoy your tweets..

  8. ann martin Says:

I was with you until you started dumping on blogspot.

  9. stinginthetail Says:

I picked WP because they had good Support pages, and people i liked had blogs on the platform. It was as easy as setting up a hotmail account. Then I was plagiarised by a blogspot blog within 2 days of starting on wordpress, lol. just got the stolen blog taken down – they’ve finally started acting on plagiarists

  10. Joe Says:

Other than the Blogspot issue, I’m with you.

I like Blogspot, it’s easy for a non-tech person like myself.

  11. Beth Stafford Says:

I like Blogger too – it works OK for what I do (post new art and talk about it). Really simple – has to be for a techno-doofus like me!

  12. judeshaw Says:

Great post! I really love the tone of it and of course right-on info. Looks like you got lots of feedback on blogspot.

  13. Maija Haavisto Says:

Heh. I’ve been supposed to write an article about why I don’t have a blog (except for a semi-private one which is updated about once a year these days, having fulfilled its purpose), even though I’m a professional writer and have had my personal website since 1997. There are many good reasons to blog …and for me also several good reasons not to.

  14. Erin Says:

Your thoughts are clear and organized. I enjoy reading your posts.

  15. Reasonable Robinson Says:

3 key points and no hype too! I’m working on that hockey stick readership growth 🙂

  16. mercurialme Says:

just blog for the love of it !

  17. Mikeachim Says:

My current blog is in its third incarnation, its third location. I started it back in 2004 to explore the novelty value, but started having so much fun that it hooked and reeled me in.

It’s allowed me to get my head round online publishing of all kinds, to start using social media, and to test-bed different writing styles – and also foist a lot of irreverent wibble onto the Internet for the sheer toe-wiggling hell of it.

But more than anything, it’s let to me becoming a professional blogger to the extent that I went part-time with my day job. So it’s become an essential part of a flowering writing career.

It would probably be quicker to list the ways that blogging hasn’t changed my life. 😉

  18. Willis Whitlock Says:

I’ve been on the net for over 10 years. I made several attempts at a website. I even got paid by the County of San Bernardino, CA to do a website on it’s history for their 150th year.

But all of that was somewhat short lived. I never really found a niche that I wanted to keep working at.

I started http://willisays.com in January 2008. It was mostly for the experience. I found it to be a wonderful outlet for my writing aspirations.

The thing that makes a blog better than my previous websites is the focus on content. I setup Word Press and fiddled with the theme, plug ins and widgets. But most of my time is spent on writing the content. On previous projects, I let myself get sidetracked in the coding and all.

Now I write. (and play with widgets some). I am much more happy and productive.
